Taylor Swift’s rep calls ‘insane’ marriage rumors ‘lies’
By Lacey Womack
Even though Taylor Swift and her British actor ex Joe Alwyn broke up in April 2023, the two of them have been in the headlines together recently after a song from her Midnights album was put on streaming services. The theme and contents of the lyrics have fans wondering just how long the pair was having relationship trouble because songwriting pal Jack Antonoff revealed that the song was written all the way back in December 2021.
Now, a celebrity gossip Instagram account is in hot water for sharing fan-submitted speculation about Taylor Swift and her ex. With her rep, Tree Paine, calling the rumors “lies” and “an insane thing to post,” the aforementioned Instagram account is firing back with shots of their own.
Were Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn secretly married?
Despite what DeuxMoi, a formerly fashion-based Instagram account that pivoted to celebrity gossip, may have posted, it seems like this is just a rumor.
DeuxMoi, an account that now also has a podcast and released a novel called Anon Pls., regularly posts anonymous tips submitted by their followers that can range from celebrity spottings to rumors about relationships, upcoming projects, breakups, and anything to do with the personal lives of A-listers.
On November 30, 2023, DeuxMoi posted two tips about Taylor Swift. The first alleged that “You’re Losing Me,” the formerly CD-exclusive track that Taylor Swift released to streaming services in that same week, is not just about a failing relationship, but about a relationship struggling in the midst of a miscarriage. The second claimed that the singer and her ex had a secret ceremony in 2020 or 2021. According to the claim, it was never a legal marriage, but it was referred to as a wedding ceremony by their inner circle.
Taylor Swift’s rep, Tree Paine, is well-known among Swifties for her PR skills and this was no exception. The same day DeuxMoi posted the claims, she responded via social media by saying:
"Enough is enough with these fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi. There was NEVER a marriage or ceremony of ANY kind. This is an insane thing to post. It’s time for you to be held accountable for the pain and trauma you cause with posts like these."
One of the reported two owners of the DeuxMoi account responded by saying they “make zero dollars from lying” and apologized to Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn: “Also, to relate something that is in reference to something that happened years ago to ‘pain & trauma’ after what just happened seems like a poor choice of words. Either way, I apologize to Taylor.”
This isn’t the first time marriage rumors have swirled for the pair. When speaking to WSJ, her ex referenced the constant questioning and badgering he received about their future together by saying, “f I had a pound for every time I think I’ve been told I’ve been engaged, then I’d have a lot of pound coins.”
In her song “Lavender Haze,” Taylor referenced her relationship and said the song was about being in love and protecting the relationship that you have from outside forces — something that for an A-list couple like the two of them were includes engagement rumors and questioning. “All they keep asking me is if I’m gonna be your bride/ the only kinda girl they see is a one night or a wife,” she sings in the opening track from her album Midnights.
Because of how private Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn were when they were together, responses like the one from Tree Paine and lyrics from Taylor’s songs are likely all fans are going to get when it comes to finding out what was going on behind the scenes of their relationship.
