RHOP: Candiace Dillard Bassett is the dangerous one here
By Amanda Cline
All of the tweets Candiace Dillard Bassett from The Real Housewives of Potomac thought were okay to tweet for when she inevitably deletes them.
The Real Housewives of Potomac has been locked into the fight between Candiace Dillard Bassett and Monique Samuels all season long. Now that The Real Housewives of Potomac season 5 is wrapping up, Candiace really showed her true colors yet again after the most recent episode. While the rest of the women are worried about how a physical fight looks for Black women on television, Candiace is out here perpetuating stereotypes that they have been trying to separate themselves from for years.
Candiace insinuated Monique was some type of zoo animal and said that it is what “we” expect from “your kind.” For reference when she deletes the tweet, the full text says: “I made it legal because like they do in the zoo, you made it violent. But keep gaslighting. It’s what we expect from your kind.” From day one, Candiace has always acted like everyone was below her. When someone else on Twitter questioned her statement, she referred to them as a street rat.
“Street rats can’t afford lawyers. Make sure you tell them you’re a fan,” Candiace said. Candiace doesn’t even know this person yet you can tell she thinks they are below her. Who speaks to strangers this way and thinks it’s okay? Candiace does. It is disappointing that Monique was the one who fell for her antics because Candiace truly is the worst kind of person.
“Enjoy explaining how harassing a Black woman ad nauseam on Twitter for no reason at all doesn’t qualify you to burn in hell,” another response read. The problem isn’t that Candiace is scary on Twitter, but she believes she is so far above everyone else she comes off like a crazed politician. How is that any different from how Black women are often marginalized? Her behavior sets everyone back about ten steps.
She called Ashley Darby a “bed wench,” which is a horrifying term that was used to describe enslaved Black women “whose specific function was to have sex with the plantation’s White owner, her master,” according to Tariq Nasheed on Ebony.com. She called someone else a roach. Now she’s telling strangers they deserve to burn in hell for a tweet. I imagine all of the Candiace supporters are working extra hard this morning to try and twist this new narrative around in some fantastic new scheme.
It really is sad that Candiace thinks that insulting Monique and calling strangers names somehow elevates her. It doesn’t make her more educated or a better person. It is horrifying to watch and Candiace becomes unhinged at the smallest of inconveniences, which is what this entire fight hinges on. I imagine if I was in front of her right now, she would “release” a glass into my face, too. Candiace is the dangerous one here, not Monique.
Candiace Dillard Bassett & The Real Housewives of Potomac will be back next Sunday at 9 PM.
