Blue Ivy Carter, 11, is the oldest daughter of Beyonce and Jay-Z and is slowly becoming a star in her own right. The film for Beyonce’s Renaissance World Tour had its premiere on November 25 and during the of the film, Beyonce opened up about the fact that her oldest daughter was going to be performing on stage right alongside her superstar mother, but it almost didn’t happen.

“She told me she was ready to perform,” Beyonce says in the film, according to The New York Times, “and I told her no.”

As members of the Beyhive know, the “Crazy in Love” singer must have had a change of heart at some point because in May 2023, Blue Ivy Carter made her stage debut and danced right alongside her mom on stage during her songs “My Power” and “Black Parade.”

Being the daughter of two of music’s biggest names has always had Blue Ivy in the spotlight and dancing next to mom Beyonce and all of her professional backup dancers was no different. She made her first foray into the dance world on stage at one of the biggest tours of 2023 and when fans felt she didn’t bring the full talent and energy that they knew she must have inheireted from her parents, they were more than a little critical of the 11-year-old.

Instead of letting the negative comments on her dancing get to her, Blue Ivy proved that her parents didn’t raise a quitter and she took the criticism as inspiration to get better and improve her dance skills instead of backing down.

Even though Beyonce was originally hesitant to let her daughter into the spotlight in such a major way, Blue Ivy’s dad, Jay-Z, is a proud dad who said he had “goosebumps” watching his oldest daughter on the stage. During an interview with CBS Mornings about his Book of HOV exhibit at the Brooklyn Public Library, he spoke about his daughter dancing:

"Because Blue’s been born into this world, she’s been born into a life she didn’t ask for. Since she was born, she’s been in scrutiny and everyone has an opinion. Even [as] a little girl, how she keeps her hair. So, for her to be on that stage and reclaim her power, and the song is called ‘My Power,’ and it’s just — you can’t write a better script."

Blue Ivy saw the negative comments about her dancing online and started working with the dancers and choreographers to really nail the routines for those two songs. When fans saw her on the stage during the next stops of the tour, she didn’t just make her parents proud, but the fans that have watched her grow up, too.
