British music lovers had plenty to brag about in 2022 – but none more so than Harry Styles.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you will have heard of Harry Styles. Originating as a member of X-factor made British boyband One Direction, he has turned into a household name, not just in the U.K. but globally now too.

2022 was a pretty good year for Harry too. He went on a world tour, headlined Coachella, and produced a Grammy-nominated album called Harry’s House – you may have heard of it.

The album kicks off and pretty much sets the tone with his single “Music for a Sushi Restaurant”. It was one of three supporting singles, the other two being “As It Was” and “Light Night Talking”.

The single which truly stole the show for Harry Styles, though, was “As It Was”. The single, which reached a proportionally larger audience thanks to TikTok, was the most streamed single, both in the U.K. and globally, according to the BBC.

Spotify Wrapped was keeping an eye on the listening figures of “As It Was” and found it was streamed an astonishing 1.5 billion times last year. Unfortunately, for those of us who listen to nature sounds to sleep, it would have gone over our heads how many times it was listened to.

Styles has claimed the song to be about metamorphosis and coming of age – a striking theme of the album as a whole. As we enter the year of 2023, we can use this as a key message to take on the new year.

The new year will hopefully treat us to some great new music – however, As It Was will take some beating, not just in terms of statistics, but in terms of cultural impact.
