One of the most iconic shows in the history of television is The Office. The adaptation of the British sitcom was a slow-burner at first, but quickly became one of the most intriguing programs on television.

Its real-life, mockumentary style was relatively new to TV and the characters felt extremely real. The show was also pretty vulgar, but it wasn’t anything overwhelming to most audiences.

Still, it’s harder to get a good show out on the air these days. All shows, especially on major networks, seem extremely watered-down. So this begs the question: would the office work in 2022?

Mindy Kaling thinks nearly every character from ‘The Office’ would be canceled today

According to Variety, former The Office actor and writer Mindy Kaling said that the show wouldn’t be able to be done today. She explains that the show is “so inappropriate now,” continuing by explaining how her character “would have quit Dunder Mifflin to become an influencer, and then probably be canceled, almost immediately. Actually, most of the characters on that show would be canceled by now.”

It’s important to note that this was her response when asked about a reboot — something that many fans have been asking for for a long time.

Personally, I do not entirely agree with her here. I mean. . . the show is on Peacock. Like, still. Nobody has been canceled and it’s still an extremely popular series. What she may be going for here, however, might be the concept that the characters that were developed in the 2000s would not have agreeable character arcs in the modern-day. That much is fair.

Still, there are raunchier shows out there. A Twitter user named Roger, who is apparently 6’5″, pointed out It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as an example of why it would work. His tweet can be seen below.

This reinforces the argument that The Office would be just fine in 2022. I’m not here to do a full comparison breakdown between the two shows but I’ve watched both multiple times — It’s Always Sunny is way raunchier and goes way further than the office.

Unfortunately, we’ll likely never find out if a reboot of The Office is a true possibility.
