On one of music’s most celebratory night’s, Maxwell took Michael Jackson fans back in time with his silky rendition of “The Lady in My Life” at Sunday’s 2022 Billboard Music Awards.
The performance was in tribute to the late pop icon’s sixth studio album Thriller, which turns 40 this upcoming November. Can you believe that?
While the soft tune is not the most popular song off the album that solidified Michael Jackson as the King of Pop, Maxwell did the song justice as he emerged from the dark lit shadows of the MGM Grand Garden Arena stage wearing a sparkly black suit jacket with a matching tie, along black gloves, and shoes.
Maxwell honored to take 2022 Billboard Music Awards stage in tribute of a musical icon
In a style unique to Maxwell, he captured the audience with a tone enriching music fans in memory and celebration of Michael Jackson’s iconic album, while at the same time introducing a new generation of fans to a transcendent figure who changed the landscape of pop music.
To say Maxwell was honored to would be an understatement. The “Pretty Eyes” singer talked about how hard he worked to get the performance just right ahead of the 2022 Billboard Music Awards in a Red Carpet interview with Rossi Diaz.
"“I’m feeling honored to be here, honored to be able to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Thriller, one of the biggest and greatest albums that’s ever hit,” Maxwell said on the E! Red Carpet pre-show. “I’ve been up since six in the morning trying to get everything together, and you know, just want to do right – it’s Michael Jackson. There’s nobody better, nobody greater, so I just want to do it well, and then do it with my own twist, but truly it’s just an absolute honor.”"
It truly was Maxwell’s twist to the song that brought it justice. Again, his smooth sound really brought out the lyrics of the song as he threw in a shoutout to R&B queen Mary J. Blige who was also celebrated on the night and ended the song with “We love you Michael Jackson.”
