Rochelle Rock – Everybody Hates Chris

Rochelle Rock is loosely based on Chris Rock’s mother, although I’m sure it’s safe to say she’s an exaggerated version of the real-life mom. She is a hard-nosed, strict African-American mother who isn’t afraid to threaten her children into obedience.

When her children fall out of line, it’s nothing for to promise to “slap you into next week” or “slap you into another nationality,” although she rarely follows through. She may seem like a tough cookie, but she is easily softened by a sincere “I’m sorry” or “Yes ma’am,” from her kids.

She’s less apt to soften to her husband Julius, who she is constantly accusing of having an affair. It’s a running gag on the show because everyone knows Julius would never. Rochelle’s penchant for violence extends to her husband, despite the improbability of an affair. She even threatened to kill him at some point. Although he’s not cheating, I wouldn’t put it past to her to do it if she ever found out he was.

As much as she wants her children to mind and her husband staying faithful, she also hates gambling, and she voices her opinion loudly and often. Her strong feelings about it stem from her father’s gambling habits, and she can’t be talked out of it, no matter how irrational.

Rochelle also has an irrational aversion to babies, often reminding her children that she “ain’t raising no babies.” This means they better not come home pregnant or with a pregnant girl in tow. She wants her children to grow up to fulfill their best, and she doesn’t care if they like her in the process. Rochelle isn’t here to be their friends but to be their mother.
