Beverly Goldberg – The Goldbergs

I am not ashamed to admit that my children routinely compare my mothering style to that of Beverly Goldberg. As Jenkintown, Pensylvania’s, resident smother (mother + smother) there is no effort too large for her precious, darling angels. She is pushy, overbearing, and believes her children can do anything they want, no matter what. She deals in too-long hugs, aggressive kisses, and mixing-in.

Her three children, despite the ubiquitous eye rolls and exasperated sighs, absolutely need her to survive. Sure, she probably crippled them with her constant fussing and over-doing, but they depend on her love and support to get through the tough adolescent years.

Beverly may be ridiculous in many, many ways, but she is fiercely serious when it comes to protecting her children. Nothing is too small or too insignificant to make a huge ordeal out of. Don’t want to climb the rope in gym class? No problem. Beverly to the rescue. Want to pursue a career in major league baseball at the age of 16? Absolutely. Need her to spend the night in your college dorm the first night of the semester? Check.

Aside from her extreme parenting, Beverly is known for her bedazzled sweaters and perfectly hot-rolled hair. She never goes anywhere without looking her ’80s best. And the most fun thing about this character is that she is based on executive producer, Adam Goldberg’s, real mother. In a fun bit of gratitude, he often includes real home movies after the credit, to let us in on the glory that is the real Beverly Goldberg. In terms of comparison, I could do a lot worse.
