On May 27, 2021, the Friends cast finally came together again in HBO Max’s long-anticipated Friends: The Reunion special which saw Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer reuniting for the first since the show wrapped production nearly two decades ago.
The special was filled with incredible moments as the cast reflected upon one of television’s greatest shows and of course, no reunion would be complete without a few surprise guests — and boy, did HBO Max pull out all the stops!
Although there were some notable absences, the reunion special managed to bring back many beloved and familiar faces including Elliott Gould, Larry Hankin, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler and Reese Witherspoon.
HBO Max’s Friends reunion special also managed to sneak in a few surprise appearances from celebrity superfans including one appearance from an Oscar-winning singer and actor who joined Kudrow for an unforgettable performance of “Smelly Cat.”
Lisa Kudrow reveals Lady Gaga nearly brought her to tears
During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show following the reunion special,Lisa Kudrow revealed that she was truly blown away by Lady Gaga’s cameo which the actress claims nearly brought her to tears.
"“That really almost made me cry,” said Kudrow. “That blew me away. Also coming from her, because my son was in grade school, all the kids were listening to Lady Gaga and her whole message was everyone be yourself and just be you. That was amazing.”"
While the duet went off without a hitch, Kudrow confessed she had to relearn the chords to the song before the performance. Even after picking up the chords again with a little help from YouTube, she revealed anxiety nearly got the best of her.
"“I learned it, and then my throat closed,” said Kudrow. “I was so panicked! I couldn’t get anything out! I didn’t know what was going to happen.”"
Luckily, all seemed to work out in the end as the duet with Gaga quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the special.
