The press around Kelly Dodd being fired from Positive Beverage is certainly the most publicity the company ever received with her as a spokesperson. However, the reaction to her firing from the drink company was not well received. Fans of the Real Housewives of Orange County star think that her freedom of speech was taken away since she can’t discuss her views without being fired. These are simply consequences to Kelly’s actions, not her freedom being taken away.
It isn’t that outrageous to think that a company looking to turn a profit would rather you not be in the news upsetting potential customers every other day. If Kelly had not spent so much time disparaging those who have different views than her, she probably would not have been fired.
Offering “cheers” to super spreaders and not wearing masks isn’t humorous to everyone. At the Real Housewives of Orange County reunion, Andy Cohen made it clear he didn’t find her behavior humorous. The other women seemed to agree. But the discourse around the news about Kelly’s firing largely revolved around how her freedom of speech was violated.
Kelly is free to say and think whatever she wants, but not all companies want to be linked to Kelly’s thoughts. The statement put out by Positive Beverage CEO Zach Muchnick says just that. “It has become clear over the past few months that Kelly’s controversial views and opinions have distracted from our primary objectives, so effective today, we are no longer affiliated with Kelly Dodd-Leventhal.” They want to put space between them and the never-ending cycle of negative news surrounding Kelly.
Controversy surrounds Kelly Dodd amid the firing of the Real Housewives of Orange County star from Positive Beverage.
Kelly believes she is a victim of “cancel culture” and thinks that those who don’t agree with her are a “bunch of haters that would never have any voice and here they are getting together” to come after her. If Kelly wasn’t causing controversy every other day through her Instagram stories, this likely would not have happened. Perhaps she even violated the terms of her contract with them which led to the decision. That isn’t “cancel culture,” that’s just another consequence.
We are entitled to our own opinions and freedom of speech, but sometimes not everyone you are associated with agrees. Positive Beverage is entitled to that decision just like Kelly is entitled to wear a Drunk Wives Matter hat. Will there be consequences for Positive Beverage? Probably not though.
