Mary Cosby might have been the most shocking part of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City premiere, but it actually makes sense? Sort of?
When Mary Cosby first slid onto the scene of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, she made quite a splash with the news about her marriage. Mary married her late grandmother’s husband, Bishop Robert C. Cosby, at her request and most of us didn’t get past that news to hear the rest of her story. During the third episode of the show, we got a better look into her marriage and what led to the decision.
Mary noted that her grandmother, Dr. Rosemary Redmon Cosby, was the head of their church and when she passed away in 19997, she felt it was the right choice to take over the position. “I wanted to give you everything I didn’t have growing up….I want you to have it.” Mary’s grandmother was not only the head of the church, she founded the church, too.
The First Lady of Faith Temple Pentecostal Church commented that she was 22 when she married her grandmother’s husband and it caused issues with her mother, Rosalind Cazares. Mary’s mother felt that she deserved the spot that was offered to Mary, including the money, the church, and the husband.
It is weird discussing the marriage to her grandfather in terms of a business deal, but it sounds like that’s exactly what it came down to. The relationship with Rosalind is still strained from the sound of it. It also sounds like Rosalind blamed Robert for the death of her mother, but nothing came of that.
There are a few important clarifications to be made about the business-deal-turned-marriage: Mary and Robert were not related by blood, only by marriage. In addition to that, Robert was her grandmother’s second husband. Does it sound weird? Sure does. But in a technical sense…it’s fine?
Mary and Jen Shah have some serious drama brewing after Mary insinuated Jen “smelled like hospital,” so we’re sure this won’t be the last we hear of Mary’s story.
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is on Bravo every Wednesday at 10 PM.
