Real Housewives of Dallas: LeeAnne and her use of “Mexican” is not okay
By Amanda Cline
The Real Housewives of Dallas went off to Thailand for a cast trip this week and after the initial jetlag wore off, things got a bit wild.
LeeAnne Locken’s treatment of Kary Brittingham in the most recent Real Housewives of Dallas episode was not cute. And trust me, I love LeeAnne, but we have a problem here. LeeAnne continues to use the phrase “Mexican,” she says not in a derogatory way. It certainly comes off as a derogatory way, though. LeeAnne has been busy on twitter defending herself, but it is falling on deaf ears (eyes?) at this point.
I, personally, really loved LeeAnne’s antics both on and off-screen in previous seasons. Yes, she’s bonkers, but the bonkers ones usually make for great television. But this season has been different. LeeAnne has been mean and not fun to watch. Most of the time has been spent on her wedding, but she seems to really hate when the attention is off of her for any time.
Kary Brittingham is certainly aligned with LeeAnne’s enemy, D’Andra Simmons, which put a target on her back from the start. Anyway, LeeAnne called Kary both a “chirpy Mexican” and told her to use her “Mexican words,” during the episode.
LeeAnne says this is her nationality, and that her and Kary and the “same race,” so her words should not offend. LeeAnne was shown going off saying “Come on Mexican, I thought you were all Mexican and strong.” You can watch the clip on BravoTV.com. I mean, no matter how you want to explain it, it’s clear LeeAnne was not complimenting her Mexican heritage. LeeAnne seems to think that because it’s her “nationality,” that calling her Mexican this or Mexican that is okay. While LeeAnne was talking to Brandi Redmond, she even said, “I should have made the joke in Hispanic and not English.” LeeAnne. ARE YOU JOKING? Because no one is laughing.
LeeAnne’s been getting a lot of heat on twitter lately, and her replies show her replying endlessly to people upset about this episode. Sometimes, if that many people are upset about something you’ve said, it’s a good idea to reflect and perhaps change your behavior….just maybe.
The Real Housewives of Dallas is on Wednesdays at 9 PM ET on Bravo.
