There’s no way to explain how it feels to discover someone you love suddenly died without any warning unless you’ve gone through that world-turned-upside-down heartbreak.

For Frankel, her position on RHONY requires, however, that the Skinnygirl product creator attempt to explain how she felt when she learned of Dennis Shields’ death. It’s been about seven months since the 51-year-old died, and she told Us Weekly that she still has “sad days.”

Bethenny revealed that she “loved Dennis, and we talk about him a lot now, more [now] that the dust has settled.” Calling grief “a crisis in and of itself,” Frankel shared that those who loved him are “trying to survive and trying to feel.”

Since Shields died, Bethenny noted that she seeks ways to “make yourself feel better in any way that you can.” And two furry little animals are helping with that goal.

Frankel has two dogs, Biggie and Smallz, who Dennis persuaded her to get. He was the one who named the puppies and he was “obsessed with them,” added Bethenny. Consequently, they help brighten her life.

Explaining the death to her daughter, 8-year-old Bryn, was challenging as well, said Frankel. She co-parents the little girl with her ex-husband Jason Hoppy.

“My daughter’s an old soul, and she’s very adult and I’m honest with her,” summed up Bethenny.

Prior to his death in August 2018, Dennis had proposed to Frankel, making the loss even more heartbreaking.
